Diary of a Ghetto Priest: Miracles of Miracles!

Posted in News

Belonging to the Lord, and, working for His kingdom is simply amazing. All kinds of miraculous things take place. Food is placed on the table, medicines are provided, a woman walks who was a cripple, a cheque is paid to cover our electricity.

You feel that He is right there beside you “Do not be anxious! What shall I eat? What shall I wear? Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

“Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.”

Every day our Brothers and myself pray and are in wonderment. “Lord how shall we provide these beautiful homeless people with all their needs?” For breakfast there is bread, eggs, porridge, tea or coffee; on a good day we have rice porridge. Then for lunch there is some meat or fish, rice or yam, potato and peas and flour dumpling. For supper, there is rice again or some bread fruit, callalloo and some dessert from Honey bun. Then finally there are snacks before going to bed. Food! That’s it in providing for the hungry the most basic of needs.

But we have to provide at least water to drink; for breakfast this is tea or coffee, and for a real treat hot cocoa. But a glass of water hot or cold has to be provided intermittently during the day “water, me want water” even that we have to pay for! Thank God the government helps us with a big concession. “I was thirsty and you gave me water to drink.”

Clothes! Every day there is the washing of clothes that must be done. We don’t use washing machines, so it must be done by hand. Smelly! Yuck! But we offer it up to the Lord. Some of our homeless are incontinent, both kids and adults. What to do? It’s part of the human reality. WE all know that from personal experience! The clothes, some have to be mended, some have to be replaced. “I was naked and you clothed me!”

Just about anyone of our homeless and destitute has some illness or deformity and needs medical or nursing care. Some of our mentally ill people need psychotic medications, some need for hypertension or diabetes like Metformin, Losartan, Enalapril etc. are needed. Some need pain killers, some need to have their bandages cleaned, some have head-aches. Taking care of over 800 people all from the streets means the sick. Medicines, healthcare, comforting, are all part of the brothers roles. “ Blessed are those who comfort the sick.”

Then during the day we pray, we sweep, we play, we share stories, we sing, we dance with the homeless and destitute who are our salvation and our joy.

That’s exactly what I mean “Pray as though everything depends upon God, work as though everything depends on you.” That’s why miracles happen!

None of the Brothers or Sisters or myself or our new general Brother Anil earn any money. Yet God continues to provide!

It’s really fascinating! Here we are, Missionaries of the Poor doing the same work in India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Uganda, Kenya, Haiti, US, Trinidad, East Timor – and, it all originates out of Jamaica! Thousands of the poorest of people in mostly the poorest of countries. Miracles of Miracles!
