History
The Missionaries of the Poor arrived in the Archdiocese of Kampala on September 29th 2000, pioneered by Fr. Philip Selvaraj, Bro. Marc Maurice and Bro. Kishore Ekka. This young congregation from Kingston, Jamaica soon put their stamp on the Archdiocese by their enthusiasm and missionary zeal, gathering vocations and building their monastery and the apostolate and reaching out to the poor.
The institute now has Our Lady of Good Counsel Monastery at Mutundwe, Kampala in which 80 young men are presently in formation (27 novices, 12 postulants, 41 aspirants). They are being supervised by 20 professed members (2 priests, 18 Brothers).
The Missionaries of the Poor also conducts the Good Shepherd Home for homeless people and orphans at Mengo-Kisenyi, Kampala in which 282 adults and children are permanently cared for in all aspects of their lives.
